Dos chocolates y un tamal, por Isabel Salas
Helena está absorta en su reflejo. Mira sus cabellos rojizos, la línea negra que bordea sus ojos. El rojo intenso de sus labios y el azul turquesa del vestido tipo sastre que decidió ponerse hoy. Lleva 15 minutos allí, sentada en una silla de madera y apoyando sus brazos sobre la mesa, también de madera. Desde ese estrecho segundo piso de la Puerta Falsa mira su reflejo en el espejo que abarca toda la pared. Se ve sentada de lado, con la pierna derecha cruzada sobre la izquierda. Con esa altivez característica de su rostro, marcada siempre por la ceja izquierda alzada. Perfectamente alzada.
A su alrededor todo se mueve, un mesero que sube y baja con tazas de chocolate, tamales y almojábanas. Clientes que buscan acomodo en la barra o en las cuatro mesas que ocupan el segundo piso. Pero a Helena nada la perturba, está allí, estática, absorta en su imagen, en sus recuerdos.
– ¡Helenita! Mamita, que pena la demora
María Teresa sonríe, pone su bolso sobre la mesa y se abalanza a darle un beso en la mejilla.
– Tere, siéntate. Ese chall no te lo conocía.
– Me lo llevó Marquitos la semana pasada. Ya sabe que me gustan oscuros y con tejidos-
Va diciendo María Teresa mientras se sienta frente a su amiga, con la espalda recta y el mentón arriba, una leve sonrisa se dibuja en sus labios pintados de un rosa opaco. Entrecierra sus ojos pequeños y gira su rostro hacía el espejo, como quien sabe que se encontrará con una sorpresa. Entonces, una sonrisa se le escapa.
– Míranos, no cambiamos.
– Perdón señoras ¿Ya saben qué van a pedir? – Junto a la mesa un joven mesero las interpela.
Sin dejar de mirar sus reflejos Helena responde.
– Lo de siempre, dos chocolates y un tamal.
Con un silencio cómplice las amigas se observan en el espejo. Observan con detenimiento el reflejo de dos mujeres jóvenes, altas, esbeltas. Llamativas en cualquier lugar y circunstancia. Dos mujeres de sonrisas fáciles y miradas desafiantes.
Recorren sus cabellos largos y luminosos, finos, suaves. La piel blanca, limpia. Libre de marcas, más allá de las que deja una buena sonrisa. De esas que son amplias y dejan ver los dientes. Sonrisas fuertes, que levanta las mejillas hasta el límite con los ojos. Sonrisas sonoras, sin vergüenza.
– Perdón, señoras. Voy a ponerles por aquí- Interrumpe un poco incomodo el mesero, que busca un espacio entre los brazos de Helena y María Teresa para dejar el pedido.
– Gracias, señor, gracias – Dice María Teresa sin voltearlo a mirar.
Sin despegar su mirada del espejo, Helena toma un trozo de almojábana y se lo lleva a la boca. Sigue con sus ojos cada uno de los movimientos para masticar.
Mientras tanto, María Teresa ubica el queso en su plato, lo corta en trocitos y los deja caer en la taza del chocolate. Con las dos manos la levanta a la altura de su nariz, huele, saborea, se mira.
Ese es el ritual, sentarse allí, arriba, y mirarse. Mirarse tanto como sea posible. Comer despacio, sin afán y mirarse. Oler el chocolate, partir en cubitos el queso, comerse por trozos la almojábana y mirarse. Compartir un tamal, aplastar la masa entre la lengua y el paladar, y mirarse.
Así, hasta que todo queda limpio y es hora de irse, hora de dejar de mirarse.
El mesero, que ha preguntado tres veces si ya puede retirar, por fin recibe el sí para llevarse las tazas y los platos.
María Teresa cierra los ojos. Para Helena es más difícil despegarse de su imagen. Parpadea. Extiende sus brazos y toma las manos de su amiga, les da un suave pero reconfortante apretón. Agacha su cabeza, cierra los ojos y los vuelve abrir.
Ambas se miran, ya no en el espejo.
– ¿Hasta el próximo 22? – Pregunta María Teresa tratando de encontrarse en las cataratas que cubren los ojos de Helena.
– Sí, Tere. Hasta el 22 – Hace una pausa y continúa –Vámonos que con estos trancones la ciudad es imposible.
Helena toma su bastón, se impulsa y se pone de pie. Con sus manos temblorosas, María Teresa toma el chall negro por las puntas y lo cruza en su pecho, mira hacía el primer piso y con la cabeza hace una señal.
– Yo no sé si la próxima vez vaya a poder subir… – Las palabras se le escabullen.
– Ya ahí viene Ramiro… él te ayuda a subir si acaso no puedes- la consuela Helena.
Despacio y con ayuda de Ramiro, el conductor de María Teresa, ambas mujeres bajan las escaleras, cruzan el primer piso, escabulléndose en silencio entre meseros, comensales y la fila de quienes van a pagar o comprar un postre.
Afuera, mientras Ramiro paga la cuenta, las mujeres se despiden de un abrazo. El viento frío que baja de los cerros pone a danzar sus cabellos, delgados, cortos y blancos. Se miran por última vez, cómplices. Saben que sus reflejos se quedan en ese lugar, eternos, estáticos, jóvenes. Como un recuerdo que no se puede borrar.
